Saturday provided our first joint fishing expedition for many months, our last session concluded with one bandaged thumb and one pike of almost 19 lbs. We travelled to the River Don and fished a stretch well upstream from the Sheffield Wednesday Ground. The river level was dropping after the heavy rains of the day before.
Stick float was the order of the day, a heavy avon style float (7BB) being chosen and the bulk shot positioned close to the hook allowing me to keep the bait close to the bottom in the turbulent water (see diagram Below).
We settled in two pegs next to which we could trot just off of the rod tip in 3-4 ft of water. The fish came thick and fast. The only species of fish caught all day were grayling and trout, the biggest of each being around the 1 lb mark (when i was feeling generous!). A busy days fishing that I thoroughly enjoyed.

A nice Brown Trout of around 1/2lb (note the Japanese Knotweed backdrop) |
Just to finish off with I'm going to show one of a selection of the terrible photos of Grayling taken throughout the day (they are not easy to hold - especially when James has bullied them to the net).
